After tallying most of the returns from sales of buttons that provided admission to dozens of events, organizer Leslie Collins, of Scranton Tomorrow, reported a 20 percent increase in sales. About 6,000 buttons for downtown Scranton’s alcohol-free New Year’s Eve party were sold, compared with about 5,000 the year before. Some events, such as “The Brain Show” and “Comedy Dojo,” had lines of people waiting to get into the Northeast Theater Performance Space at the Hotel Jermyn and the Scranton Cultural Center. Twice as many teens turned out for the Battle of the Bands at Holy Cross High School compared to last year. Beyond ticket sales, an estimated 10,000 people turned out for the fireworks at midnight.
